Bruce deJong, CPCU, ARM, AIC didn’t set out to build a career in insurance—he once dreamed of flying planes. But, as he likes to remind his classes, risk and uncertainty have a way of charting their own course. Forty years later, Bruce has turned that unexpected journey into a calling he clearly loves.
As Director of Learning and Development at Mutual of Enumclaw, Bruce draws on deep experience in both Claims and HR, a combination that gives his teaching uncommon depth. Backed by a master’s degree in Applied Behavioral Science and multiple industry designations, he brings both technical credibility and a human-centered approach to the classroom. Since 2018, he has taught with The Alliance, served as a curriculum development advisor for the CIC program, delivered continuing education to agents, and shared his insights as a keynote speaker for national industry organizations.
What sets Bruce apart is how he teaches. He creates space for curiosity, encourages participants to suspend judgment, and helps them quiet the self-limiting beliefs that often hold professionals back. One of his favorite moments is watching doubt give way to confidence—when learners suddenly see their own potential more clearly.
Bruce also begins every class with a reminder many didn’t know they needed: insurance professionals matter. By framing the industry as guardians of stability and peace of mind, he helps participants feel proud of their work. In nearly every session, someone pulls him aside to say, “I needed to hear that”—and that, for Bruce, is the best part of teaching.
