Ted Kinney’s classroom isn’t confined to four walls; it spans all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and decades of experience that bring insurance to life in ways few can match. Armed with an impressive list of designations (CIC, CPCU, ARM, AU, AAM, AAI, AINS, and CRIS), Ted blends deep technical expertise with a storyteller’s instinct, transforming complex coverage concepts into memorable, practical lessons.
Since earning his CIC in 1980 and stepping into a teaching role in 1990, Ted has taught thousands of students, drawing on a career that touches nearly every corner of the industry: underwriting, sales, agency operations, and education leadership. As Director of Education and Technical Affairs for the Alabama Independent Insurance Agents, and through Kinney Training and Consulting, he continues to shape the next generation of insurance professionals with clarity and purpose.
But what truly sets Ted apart are the moments that linger. Like the day in Lansing, Michigan, when a late-night gall bladder attack landed him in the emergency room, only for him to check himself out against medical advice and teach a full-day CIC class just hours later. “I told them I was on morphine; they laughed,” he recalls, “and I said, ‘No, really, I am.’” He doesn’t remember much of that day, but his students do, as it earned his best evaluations ever.
For Ted, teaching isn’t just about delivering content; it’s about connection. He relishes the exchange of ideas, the unexpected questions, and the quiet satisfaction of hearing someone say they enrolled because he was the instructor. After more than 50 years in the field, he still sees every class as a two-way street: one where he learns just as much as he teaches.
That enduring curiosity and gratitude continue to define his journey.
