The Risk & Insurance Education Alliance mourns the loss of Walter J. Gdowski, past chair of The Risk & Insurance Research Academy and a dedicated member of the Board of Directors from 2010 to 2016. Walt served as chair in 2012 and passed away on Monday, May 12, 2025, after a long illness.
Beyond his invaluable service to The Alliance, Walt Gdowski was a towering figure in the insurance industry as the CEO and owner of Rough Notes. His leadership at Rough Notes saw the esteemed publication undergo a significant transformation in content and format. He championed the independent agent, establishing an editorial board comprised of these professionals and introducing initiatives such as the monthly series that profiles an outstanding agency and the prestigious Rough Notes Agency of the Year award. Furthermore, Rough Notes proudly sponsors the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents’ “Young Agents of the Year Award,” demonstrating Walt’s commitment to the future of the industry.
In addition to his professional achievements, Walt possessed a deep passion for aviation, particularly vintage aircraft. He was an avid pilot and a dedicated collector of these historical flying machines. This enthusiasm for flight reflected his adventurous spirit and his appreciation for engineering and history.
Walt’s connection to The Alliance was deep and impactful. He generously served as “The Alliance’s Voice in the Press,” fostering a strong relationship exemplified by Dr. William T. Hold’s featured column, “Hold On,” in Rough Notes magazine. The Alliance deeply valued Walt’s insightful perspective and extensive knowledge of both the insurance and risk management sectors during his tenure on the Board.

Walt Gdowski will forever be remembered for his positive influence on independent agents, his dedicated service to the Risk & Insurance Education Alliance, and his vibrant spirit. His legacy of leadership and commitment will continue to inspire us all.
